What is a smart city?
You hear the term a lot these days but what exactly is a smart city?
A smart city is an urban development vision to integrate information and communication technology and Internet of Things technology.
This needs to be done in a secure fashion to manage a city’s assets e.g data, schools, libraries, transportation systems, hospitals, energy networks, waste management, law enforcement and other community services.
Cities across the UK are now having to recognise this as technology moves forward and are seeking to find new smarter ways of doing things.
Data and technology are at the heart of every smart city and Bristol and Bath are at the forefront of innovation and recognised by Centre for Cities and McKinsey & Co as one of two globally significant digital tech clusters in the UK with more than 60,000 digital workers.
Back in February, Venturefest Bristol and Bath 2017 opened its Smart City Marketplace and showcased the very best ‘future city focused’ start-ups and scale-ups from across the South West.
Peter Clough a partner in Osborne Clarke’s litigation practice, said:
“The event focussed on two things – firstly, the components (energy, transport, living, infrastructure, money) that will integrate and entirely transform the way cities are run and how residents live their lives.
And secondly, the technology capabilities that will be so essential to making it work. The very capabilities that exist in such quantity in Bristol and Bath.”
Meet the marketplace exhibitors that took part and are playing a key role in shaping the way our cities could work in the future.
